How to Clean and Maintain Terrazzo Tabletops Versatile and Vintage
Terrazzo is making a huge comeback, but its maintenance depends on its binder. Learn how to clean cement-based and epoxy-based terrazzo tabletops like a factory pro.

How to Clean and Maintain Terrazzo Tabletops: Versatile and Vintage
Introduction
Terrazzo is a composite material made by mixing chips of marble, glass, or granite into a binder. Its beauty lies in its speckled, unique patterns. However, the maintenance rules for Terrazzo are highly dependent on its base. At our factory – VVITAL, a reliable table top factory, supplier, and manufacturer – we produce both cement-based terrazzo and epoxy-resin-based terrazzo.
Why does this matter? Because cement-based terrazzo is highly alkaline and sensitive to acids (similar to marble), while epoxy-based terrazzo is more chemically resistant but more prone to scratching the resin topcoat. Here is our manufacturer's breakdown.
We are proud to offer a versatile range of terrazzo tabletops – from classic Venetian styles to modern bold chip blends. If you love the vintage look with contemporary durability, our terrazzo collection is for you. You are welcome to contact us to order any design, size, or finish. We produce these tables in-house and can customize them to your exact requirements.
1. Daily Cleaning Routine (Universal for Both Types)
- Pre-Clean: Use a soft dust mop or vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and grit that can act as an abrasive.
- The Neutral Wash: Fill a bucket with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner (specifically formulated for stone). Use a well-wrung soft mop or cloth to wash the surface.
- Clean Water Rinse: It is crucial to rinse with clean, clear water to remove any cleaner residue, which can build up and make the surface appear dull.
- Dry Buff: Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth to restore the original sheen.
2. What to AVOID
- ❌ Acids (Crucial for Cement-Based): If your terrazzo is cement-based, vinegar, citrus, and acidic tile cleaners will eat away at the binder, leaving pitted surfaces. For epoxy-based, acids are less damaging but can still stain the marble chips.
- ❌ Abrasives: Steel wool, scouring powders, and heavy-duty scrub brushes will scratch the surface of the resin binder, leaving unsightly scuff marks that are hard to remove without re-polishing.
- ❌ High-Pressure Washers: Never use steam mops or high-pressure water jets, as they can force water into the micro-cracks and loosen the chips.
3. Stain Removal
- General Stains: Use a specialized terrazzo stain remover. For DIY, a paste of baking soda and water can absorb general oils, but rinse thoroughly afterward.
- Rust or Metal Stains: These are the most difficult. Use a commercial rust remover designed specifically for stone (ensure it is ph-balanced). Do not use household rust removers, which contain harsh acids.
- Hard Water Deposits: Clean with a solution of white vinegar and water only if you have verified your terrazzo is epoxy-based, and even then, rinse it off within 1 minute. For cement-based, use a commercial mineral deposit remover made for stone.
4. Pro-Tip from Our Factory Floor
- The Polishing Process: Dull terrazzo can look brand new again with polishing. For small tabletops, you can use a terrazzo polishing powder or a diamond-infused polishing pad (fine grit) attached to a handheld polisher.
- Sealing: Terrazzo, especially cement-based, is very porous. We highly recommend applying a penetrating sealer at least once a year. For high-traffic areas, consider a high-quality wax or acrylic sealer applied in thin coats to act as a sacrificial layer that takes the wear and tear.

5. Summary Checklist
- ✅ Identify your binder type (Cement vs. Epoxy) first.
- ✅ Dry dust regularly.
- ✅ Use pH-neutral cleaners for all types.
- ❌ Never use vinegar/acid on cement-based terrazzo.
- 🔄 Annual sealing is highly recommended (especially cement-based).

Just a friendly reminder that the UV sealed stone tops are recommended for indoor use only.
The sealing is a resin coating on the surface. While it helps with stain resistance, prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause yellowing over time. This is especially noticeable on light-colored stone surfaces.
