How Many Chairs Fit at Your Table? A Complete Sizing Guide
Choosing the right table is about more than style—it's about comfort, function, and flow. To help you plan, we've compiled our standard size‑to‑seating recommendations based on real‑world use. Every dimension below is shown in both millimetres and inches, so you can quickly find the perfect match for your space.
Rectangular Tables
For tables with a clear length and width (length > width), use this quick reference:
| Table Size (mm) | Table Size (inches) | Recommended Seating |
|---|---|---|
| 600 × 700 | 24 × 28 | 2 |
| 1200 × 600 | 48 × 24 | 4 |
| 1200 × 700 | 48 × 28 | 4 |
| 1500 × 700 | 60 × 28 | 6 |
These counts assume standard dining chairs (18–22″ wide) and at least 24″ of table edge per person for comfortable elbow room.
Square Tables
When length and width are equal, these square sizes offer a cosy, intimate setting:
| Table Size (mm) | Table Size (inches) | Recommended Seating |
|---|---|---|
| 600 × 600 | 24 × 24 | 2 |
| 700 × 700 | 28 × 28 | 2 |
| 750 × 750 | 30 × 30 | 2 |
| 800 × 800 | 32 × 32 | 2 |
| 850 × 850 | 34 × 34 | 4 |
Note: For square tables, chairs are typically placed one per side. The 850 mm size comfortably accommodates four (one on each side).
Round Tables
Round tables encourage conversation and work beautifully in both small and large rooms:
| Diameter (mm) | Diameter (inches) | Recommended Seating |
|---|---|---|
| 600 | 24 | 2 |
| 700 | 28 | 3 |
| 800 | 32 | 4 |
| 1000 | 40 | 6 |
| 1500 | 60 | 8 |
For round tables, we recommend dividing the circumference (diameter × π) by 24″ to get a realistic seat count—our list above follows that rule for a comfortable dining experience.

General Spacing Rules That Always Apply
- Chair width – Standard chairs are 18–22″ wide; leave at least 2″ between chairs to avoid scraping.
- Elbow room – Aim for 24″ of table edge per person. This is the gold standard for relaxed dining.
- Leg clearance – Keep 12–18″ of space between the table edge and any wall or nearby furniture.
- Walkway – Allow 36–48″ behind seated chairs for servers or guests to move freely.
